The Real Reason I Share Personal Stories

1 Real Story
You may wonder why I share tidbits from my personal world here.
Moments. Experiences. Struggles. Small wins.

It’s not because I’m trying to blur boundaries for the sake of it.
It’s because I don’t believe you can truly separate who you are at work from who you are everywhere else.

You can’t bifurcate your personal life from how you show up as a leader.
It doesn’t work that way.

What’s happening in your life — the stress you’re under, the patience you’re practicing, the challenges you’re navigating — absolutely shows up in how you lead.
It blends. It bleeds. It informs your tone, your decisions, your presence.

It’s unavoidable.

When people ask what I do, I say I’m a leadership coach.
Often, they follow that with, “So… life coaching too?”

My answer is always the same: absolutely not.
Yet… leadership requires dealing with life too.

1 Leadership Insight

Authentic leadership isn’t about oversharing or bringing your whole personal life to work.
It’s about bringing your real self.

Your authentic personality — how you think, react, process, communicate — doesn’t clock out when you log into work.
And trying to keep it out of your leadership doesn’t make you professional.
It makes you performative.

Great leaders aren’t authentic because they talk about everything going on in their lives.
They’re authentic because their leadership behavior is aligned with who they actually are.

That alignment builds trust.
And trust is what makes leadership work.

You cannot eradicate poor leadership without looking at the whole person.

Skills and strategy matter, yes.
But so does self-awareness.

  • How someone leads when they’re tired.
  • How they respond when they’re triggered.
  • How their personal struggles quietly influence their leadership style.

That’s not life coaching.
That’s responsible leadership development.

1 Practical Takeaway

If you want to lead authentically:

  • Stop pretending you can leave your personality at the door
  • Notice how your personal patterns show up in your leadership
  • Work on the person and the leader — they’re the same human

Authenticity isn’t a soft skill.
It’s a leadership requirement.

And it’s why Your Dose of Mana may come from a work story or a personal one.

Because leadership shows up in both.
