How to nimmer

1 Real Story
In early 2020, I met Kathy Nimmer through a writing project she ran for her English students. She paired them with guide-dog puppy raisers, and I volunteered.

A few months later, while working toward my coaching certification, I needed a few “practice clients.” Kathy—then designing a mentorship program for new teachers in her Indiana school district—signed up.

What started as a simple coaching exercise grew into a five-year (and counting) collaboration and friendship. Kathy built SEEDS— now an award-winning mentorship program recognized by the Board of Education—from the ground up.

I had the privilege of coaching, partnering, and advising her along the way as our friendship deepened.

Kathy is one of those rare people whose presence makes others feel seen. She’s an exceptional English teacher, mentor, speaker, and author who happens to be totally blind—but it’s her insight into people that leaves you blinking in awe.

She notices everything that matters: effort, heart, humor, humanity.
And she doesn’t just notice you—she celebrates you. She shares detailed observations of all the good you bring to the world, often at the exact moment you need to hear it most.

It might be:
→ A positive affirmation after a classroom observation.
→ Feedback on a workshop.
→ A crystal jar filled with sixty hand-rolled notes of encouragement for a sixtieth birthday.
→ Or just a simple conversation.

Somewhere along the way, a word emerged for what she does so effortlessly:

“Did you nimmer her after that incredible effort?”

1 Leadership Insight
nimmer (verb)

Definition: to uplift someone through sincere words of affirmation or gratitude that make them feel lighter, valued, and truly seen.

In workplaces everywhere, people are starving for that feeling.
– 55 % of employees say they don’t feel seen as people.
– 30 % feel invisible.
– 70 % say that one meaningful conversation with a manager could impact their decision to stay

Leadership isn’t just about strategy or KPIs. It’s about connection.

And sometimes, connection begins with a simple nimmer.

1 Practical Takeaway

Imagine if every leader nimmered just one person a day.

It doesn’t have to be long or dramatic—just genuine:

“If it weren’t for you, this week would’ve been a whole lot harder.”

That’s it. Four seconds of sincerity that can change someone’s day—and maybe their decision to stay.

Don’t save your words for performance reviews.
Nimmer someone now.

Because being seen is the quiet currency of belonging.
